The remarkable true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, the charismatic editor of French Elle, who was living his life to its absolute fullest when at the age of 43, he suffers a stroke that paralyzes his entire body, except his left eye. Communicating using just that one eye, he painstakingly blinks out his best selling memoir one letter at a time, eloquently describing his interior world, his rich memories and imagined stories from lands he’d only visited in his mind.
Artist and director Julian Schnabel has done a fantastic job at recreating Baudy’s world on the big screen. Using a dreamlike collage of flashbacks, distorted images, painterly cinematography and often very humorous interior voiceover, it’s a compelling and life affirming cinematic experience.
